UK Footgolfer Laura Thomson Is Heading to the World Cup 2026

From Edinburgh to Acapulco: The UK Footgolfer Taking on the World This Summer
Laura Thomson picked up footgolf six years ago after having to quit football. Now she’s heading to Mexico to compete at the FIFG World Cup. Her story is one every footgolf fan needs to read.

Laura Thomson is 36, lives in Edinburgh, and this summer she’s flying to Mexico to compete at the biggest footgolf event on the planet.
She’s earned her place in both the individual and team events at the FIFG FootGolf World Cup 2026 in Acapulco. She got there by finishing third in the Scottish rankings and placing in the European rankings. That’s no small achievement.
But the story of how she got here is what makes it really special.
A new sport after a tough setback
Laura had to give up football for health reasons. For someone who loved the game, that’s a hard thing to accept.
Then she came across footgolf. She got in touch with Bridgend Footgolf Club in Linlithgow, went along for a game — and never looked back.
“I was looking for a new sport after having to give up football for health reasons. I came across footgolf and fell in love with it.”
Six years later, she’s one of the best players in Scotland. And she’s about to represent the UK on the world stage.
What is the FIFG World Cup?
The FIFG FootGolf World Cup is the biggest event in the sport. It happens every two years. This year it’s being held in Acapulco, Mexico — the first time ever in Latin America.
Over 1,240 players from 60+ countries are expected to take part. The event runs from 27th May to 7th June. There’s an individual competition first, then a team competition.
It will be broadcast on Televisa — one of Mexico’s biggest TV networks. So this is a proper, global sporting event. Not a niche hobby. A real World Cup.
Laura needs your support
Getting to Mexico isn’t cheap. Laura is currently looking for sponsors to help cover her green fees and playing kit costs.

The bigger picture for UK footgolf
Laura’s story is a brilliant example of what footgolf can offer. It’s a sport that welcomes people from all backgrounds. You don’t need to be a golfer. You don’t need to be a footballer. You just need to give it a go.
With the World Cup kicking off in just over a month, now is the perfect time to get involved — whether that’s following Laura’s journey, joining a local club, or finding your nearest footgolf course.
Good luck, Laura. The UK footgolf community is right behind you.
